I know this article is really old but, I just found it.
I’m Firiona’s mother and I have to say that her name being on this list is ridiculous lol. She’s 5 years old now and not ONE person has known where her name came from. I actually expected more comments from people in person but honestly, nobody has any clue. Everyone just says how pretty her name is and how much it fits her. So, yea. It’s actually a pretty normal name these days.
Hi Tabitha –Â First, I just want to say thanks for stopping by my blog. I know it’s an old post but I really appreciate your comment and hearing your point of view.
I also think I owe you a bit of an apology. I wrote this post a long time ago when I first started blogging and to be honest, looking at it now, I’m not very happy with it. It was meant to be a quick, light-hearted post but instead it’s mean-spirited and judgmental. It’s not something I’d ever write now and if reading it caused you any offence, I apologise.
For what it’s worth, I still think the names on the list are a little unusual. But so what? People have many different reasons for naming a child, reasons I don’t know. What’s important is that whatever name someone chooses has personal meaning to them and that they convey that to their child, as I’m sure you have or will with your daughter.
The problem I have is really when someone uses a name to be trendy or to make a statement – or worse, just chooses any name because they don’t care at all. Our name is such an important part of who we are as a person and I hate seeing children who are embarrassed or ashamed of their name. Our name defines us and as long as you can connect with it and it means something to you, that’s what really matters.
I mean, I’m an atheist but I’m very proud of my given names (Christopher John). I know what they represent and what they meant to my parents and I wouldn’t want to change my name for the world. It’s who I am and I imagine that’s the same for everyone, whatever their name may be!
