Be My Baby

It sucks being single on Valentine’s Day. There’s just something about being out and seeing everyone together that feels very strange. Normally I’m not someone who gets that carried away with Valentine’s Day, particularly with the commercialism, but I like the sentiment.

Whenever I think of Valentine’s Day, I start thinking of Be My Baby by The Ronettes. I grew up with a lot of 60’s music around the house, so I must have picked it up at some stage. It’s one of my favourite songs and so what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than to post the video? It’s a great video; you can almost see the lip-synching! Some things never change.

I was remembering my first Valentine card earlier. It would have been about 15 years ago now and was from one of my school friends. She left it in our letterbox and I can’t remember what it looked like but she made it herself and it was very sweet. We’re still friends now, after almost 20 years.

I remember that Valentine because it represents what I like most about Valentine’s Day; the innocence of love. One thing which does bug me about Valentine’s Day, though, is how a lot of people see it as a gesture, using that one day to express their feelings. It shouldn’t be just that one day; we should always want to be honest with each other… in the end it’s better to say too much than to say nothing at all.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Hope you have a good one. 😉

  1. It really does Suck to be alone on this day. I feel so bad for some people at work who don’t get any flowers, I’m thinking of going to Costco and buying 2 dozen roses and passing one out to everyone at work.

I wrote 2 posts about Valentines Day this week, and one highlighted my first date ever.

Feel free to check it out @

CJ: It isn’t much fun, is it? I spent the whole day trying not to watch the news and all those Valentine stories… that’s just what I need, to be more depressed! 😉 That’s a great idea about the roses, though; I’ll have to remember that next year.

Thanks for stopping by; I’ll pop across and check out your posts later. 🙂

  2. I’ve never been a huge huge fan of V-day I always thought people made too much of a big deal out of it.

I always say that I’d be so much more flattered and happy if someone did something nice and romantic for me on any day OTHER than V-day because on that day that’s what you’re supposed to do.

I like that song too 🙂

Hope you have a good Valentines day too though 🙂

CJ: V-Day is a weird tradition really, if you think about it. The whole idea of courtly love was never as grand as it was thought to be, and yet that’s still what we celebrate on V-Day. I’m like you, I’ve never made a big fuss over it… I’d rather have a kind word than a box of chocolates. But it’s still nice to get a card, eh? 🙂

Glad you liked the song too. People usually laugh when I say I like The Ronettes! Hope you had a great day. 😉

  3. Happy Valentine’s Day, CJ, true it sucks a bit being single on that day but better being alone than with someone u don’t get along with..Love should be express every day not just that one day….I’m in the same boat than u and we are not alone…

If you wish to meet a girl this year then I hope it will happen to u cause u are a very nice guy..

    Cheer up!

CJ: That’s so true, CV. I’m happy by myself, so I’d much rather be alone than be with someone who doesn’t value me for who I am… it just feels strange at this time of year.

I hope it will happen, but we’ll see. I’m not really looking to meet someone right now, but then again that’s often when you do! So we’ll see. And thanks for the compliment. 🙂

Here’s to love, eh, CV? It’s in the air today.

  4. Another terrific video you’ve shared with us! It’s just amazing that these things are still available. “Be My Baby” is a great, charming song, that stays with you.
I really liked the story of your first Valentine. So sweet. She obviously saw the characteristics in you that we all have come to know and love. Happy Valentine’s cj, from across the planet! 8)

CJ: It’s a great video, isn’t it? There are some really great old ones on YouTube if you know where to look. I just love the song; it’s so catchy, and what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with a classic song?

It’s funny about that Valentine; I remember so much about it but so little about the card itself… the feeling itself is still so clear, though, which is the important thing. She’s been a wonderful friend for a long time now; sometimes I wonder why she puts up with me, but I guess I have my moments. 😉

Happy Valentine’s Day, Muse! Have a good one. 🙂

  5. happy valentine’s day! i don’t really care that i’m single on valentine’s day. though it’s largely a celebration for lovebirds, i think it’s also for everyone else – family, friends… it’s a day to show your appreciation to the people who matter most in your life. just recently i sent a valentine card to a good friend of mine as a thank-you for her hospitality while staying at her house and visiting her hometown. she returned with a card and a roald dahl bookmark! gosh, just thinking about her makes me feel all gooey… a roald dahl bookmark!!

CJ: Happy Valentine’s Day, sulz! You’re right, V-Day is just as much for friends as it is for lovebirds. It’s a great day to say thank you to all the people who mean something to us… and isn’t that what love really is in the end, the ultimate friendship?

You’re so lucky about the bookmark! That’s a real friend who’d do that for you; thanks for sharing the feeling. 😉 And here’s to being single! It ain’t so bad, eh? 🙂

  6. Cheers to being single! 😛

I have been single all 16 3/4 years of my life so Im mostly immune to the V-Day vibes. There is a girl I really like and I haven’t had the courage to ask her out yet. I was thinking about her today. So in a way, today was different from other V-Days because this time there was a girl I wished I could have spent the day with.

It’s a really commercial gimmick if you ask me but damn these vibes are too strong!

CJ: Cheers, Bharat! The bachelors are taking over! 🙂

Valentine’s Day is very commercial, but it’s one of those festive days that has a lot of history as well… that’s what I tend to like about it, and the sentiment. I always feel sorry for the people who get depressed, though. They get forgotten about very easily.

Well, if you feel like that, maybe there’s no time like the present! There were a couple of girls I felt like that about and I’ve always regretted not saying anything… these days always bring it back, so who knows, maybe the vibes are worth listening to. Or it can make for a good poem. 😉

  7. Oh noes! As if it wasn’t enough to be single on V’day, now there’s this to cope with:
How can they treat us this way? I mean, really!

CJ: I hadn’t seen that, Muse… wow, that’s depressing. A 5 month delay? There’s no way that makes financial sense, sandwiching Trek between X-Men and Angels & Demons… I wonder if they need more time for the effects? And just as we were starting to look forward to it too…

  8. yeah my thoughts exactly. When I was much younger in secondary school, many of my friends would hook up with a guy just so they would not be alone on Sweethearts Day. I always thought that was so weird. Now, looking back I wonder if that is really such a bad idea.. as long as there is a mutual agreement. . ….that it is all in fun. I think being alone sucks all the time not just on Valentine’s Day. One can get down about it or just hold ya head high and move on with life making the best of the situation.

CJ: That’s true, being single doesn’t feel great most of the time, but at least if you feel comfortable with yourself then it doesn’t seem as bad… I’m quite happy being by myself, so it’s okay if I don’t meet someone. Like you said, it’s about making the most of the situation… and who knows, one day you might be surprised.

That’s not a bad idea for Valentine’s Day. It’s embarrassing at school if you don’t have someone or are unpopular, so maybe swapping cards or getting together for the day makes sense, as long as they know how far to take it. I can imagine the teachers not liking it much, though! It’s hard enough for them to keep the kids apart already. 🙂
