An Update and a Quiz

What Does Your Taste in Music Say About You?

This is just a quick update as it’s been a while since my last post. I’m still here but I haven’t felt up to blogging recently; I’ve been ill for several weeks and I’m still finding my routine again. I’m looking forward to posting again, though; should have a few new posts finished next week.

On the plus side I’ve had some time to think about my writing. I’ve reached a stalemate with several works and I’ve decided to set them aside for now to explore other ideas. I’ve been working on an early draft of a novel and I want to give that more attention. It’s a social thriller and very different to my other works. Hopefully it will turn out well.

I’m also planning several short stories to finish before the end of the year. I enjoy short fiction; there’s a real art to writing it. Some of my ideas are a little ambitious but I’m looking forward to the challenge… if you don’t want to push yourself, what’s the point of being a writer?

Anyway, I’ll get back to blogging more next week, but in the meantime who’s up for a quiz? I found this one earlier and thought it was fun. My result’s not bad; I enjoy a wide range of music, although I drift toward indie and alternative bands. Not sure about the financially well-off bit, though; I always thought I’d live in poverty, die at 38, and be published after my death. 🙂

I thought I’d post one of my favourite songs as well, to go with the quiz. This is Henry Lee by Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, a retelling of Young Hunting. Their relationship ended after this as well, which makes it very haunting.

  1. First of all, I just love that video you put up, CJ. I have never heard of them before. By listening to it you would almost mistake them for Leonard Cohen and Jennifer Warnes when they did “The Famous Blue Raincoat.”

I should get my hands on that CD. I loved it.

    The results of my quiz:

Your musical tastes are intense and rebellious.
You are intelligent… but in a very unconventional way.

You are curious about the world. You love doing something new.
In fact, you enjoy taking risks and doing things most people would shy away from.

You are very physical. It’s likely that you’re athletic, but not into team sports.
You have the soul of an artist. Beauty and harmony are important to you.

  2. Glad you liked it, BD. Nick Cave and PJ Harvey are two of my favourite artists; they write very dark, experimental music and they were an item for a while in the mid-90s, which is when they recorded Henry Lee. I love the song; it’s very sad but beautiful.

Interesting result for the quiz! I like the curious about the world bit and the soul of an artist; definitely seems to suit you, eh? 😉

  3. I really did like it. I’m going to search for more at you tube. Their voices are very appealing.

    I’m definitely curious. 🙂
I think your results seemed to suit you as well.

I hope you let us know how your new novel shapes up. Do you ever post them?

It’s good to have you back back in the blogosphere.
    Take care.

  4. “Your musical tastes are upbeat and conventional.
You are an easy going, optimistic person.

Family and friends are very important to you.
You enjoy caring for and helping other people.

You thrive in a tranquil environment, and you do your best to keep things peaceful.
You enjoy your life. You have your priorities straight.”

Paragraphs one and three are right on; not SURE about the middle one. Glad to read you are back to your novel and looking how you’re allotting your time. Do hope you feel better soon!

  5. Here’re my quiz results (same as BD’s):

“Your musical tastes are intense and rebellious.
You are intelligent… but in a very unconventional way.

You are curious about the world. You love doing something new.
In fact, you enjoy taking risks and doing things most people would shy away from.

You are very physical. It’s likely that you’re athletic, but not into team sports.
You have the soul of an artist. Beauty and harmony are important to you.”

I wouldn’t say rebellious, but whatever. Everything else is pretty correct, except for the “not into team sports” thing. And I don’t think 4 questions about my taste in music should be very accurate…

  6. I am impressed with the result it fits me right on!!

Look CJ at the last paragraph what I have been saying about what I would have been into for the Olympics..

In fact, you enjoy taking risks and doing things most people would shy away from.

Take care and wish u the best for ur new projects that u are taking on..

  7. @everyone -My apologies for not responding to your comments earlier. This has been my first chance to but I really appreciate them. Hopefully everything should be back to normal in a few days.

Did you find any of their songs, BD? There are a couple I really like – Cave’s Into My Arms is like poetry. What’s funny is that the Aus music awards were the other day and Nick Cave won! Good timing, eh?

I do post some of my writing… I usually post short stories more than novels, but I like to share all my work if I can. So far this one’s coming along quite well. I’ll let you know how it goes. 😉

I’ve had a bit of a break but it’s good to be back. I didn’t realise how much I’d miss it until I had other things on my mind. Have a good weekend, BD.

That sounds like a good match for you, Muse! Definitely the first part; and as for the second part – well, we all know quizzes don’t lie. 😉

And thanks for the kind wishes. I think the way I’m managing my time now is helping and I’m happy to be writing again. Now I just need to find an agent! 🙂

  8. Thanks for taking the quiz, Leap. Sounds like a good match for you, eh? Certainly the curious bit sounds right. I was a little surprised there were only 4 questions as well but I quite liked that… some quizzes have 20 questions and suck the fun out of them. This one was short but sweet. 😉

That result seems popular, doesn’t it, Colourful? You’re right, though, it does suit you! Particularly with your poetry and art. And it would suit being a gymnast too. Funny how a quiz can reveal so much, isn’t it?

And thanks, I’ll have to see how the projects go but it feels good to be writing again. Take care and have a good weekend. 🙂

  9. Just found your blog today CJ, and it’s pretty cool. Will now look to you for inspiration and guidance in ALL THINGS. 😀

I currently live in SA but am originally from the Sunshine Coast Hinterland….. [sob!] …homesickness sucks! Still trying to write something good…..sigh….whilst studying philosophy and literature….AND working. And trying to have a sort of life. How do you do it?

Oh, and by the way, my musical quiz results were the same as Colourful and Leapsecond……

I’m an alternative metal/post rock/jazz/pagan girl. And some rave/techno/trance chucked in for good measure. 🙂 Hope you feel better soon….that yucky flu?

  10. Hi Lilith, thanks for stopping by, and for the lovely compliment. I’m very proud of my blog and to know other people connect with it and my words is a great feeling. 😉

Homesickness is awful, isn’t it? I lived in England when I was younger and it was a horrible feeling. There’s nowhere like home in the end. I guess it would give you plenty to write about, though… I think the secret is just enjoying what you write; if you enjoy what you’re writing, you’ll always find time for it and it’ll be more rewarding, even if it’s just for a few minutes each day.

That seems like a popular result for the quiz; four people have had that now. Your iPod must have some interesting playlists, though! I just needed a bit of a break really… I’m looking forward to getting back into my normal routine. Take care, and thanks for the kind words. 🙂

  11. This is my result:

Your musical tastes are energetic and rhythmic.
You are full of energy and can be quite talkative.

You are forward thinking and open minded.
You despise conservatism of any sort.

You are intense, detail oriented, and motivated.
You are an ambitious person, though your ambition is anything but conventional.

Quite apt I think! Just turned 38! Still writing, still alive, still unpublished!

This is a really cool blog. I found it searching for PJ Harvey reviews. I will be back to check again, keep up the good work.
I was so inspired by the record that I posted a review of it on my blog:
    PJ Harvey White Chalk Review

Let me know what you think of it!
