Sunset at Pelican

It was a pretty cold and grey day today. I didn’t have much hope of there being much of a sunset but I decided to go to Pelican anyway just in case. Luckily the clouds ended up clearing for just long enough and it actually ended up being a very nice sunset. The photos turned out well too.

Morpeth Sunset

I sit and listen
To the wind telling
Ancient stories
To the trees

Beautiful sunset glow at Morpeth last week. Every now and then you could hear the wind whistling through the trees and it really did feel like it was talking. I wonder what stories it would tell?

Life During the Virus

This is a photo collage I put together recently of some of my favourite photos from the last few months. It’s going to be part of an exhibition next month.

The photos document some of the restrictions and changes that the first months of the pandemic brought to our lives as well as the beauty of Lake Macquarie throughout that time.

During the worst parts of those first months I thought it was important to remind myself that, despite everything, there was still beauty in the world so I focused on going for a walk every day with my camera and photographing the setting sun. We had some truly stunning sunsets and I think those pictures make for an interesting contrast, showing hope and beauty amidst the isolation.

I hope you like the photos. I’ll post a link when the exhibit opens in case anyone would like to go along. It features some really fantastic and inspiring works.

The individual photos are in a gallery below.

Nobbys Beach and Breakwall

I took these photos last Friday afternoon at Nobbys Beach and along the breakwall.

Nobbys is one of my absolute favourite places to photograph in Newcastle and this was the first time I’d been able to go there for a photowalk in about four months because of the Covid-19 restrictions. So I made the most of it and made sure I got there early to enjoy the best light and the sunset and dusk.

It was a great afternoon and I really like how the photos turned out.

Norah Head Lighthouse under the Milky Way

Went out with a friend last night to shoot a bit of astro. We went to Norah Head lighthouse on the Central Coast and I managed to get this despite battling the light from the lighthouse. Really like how it turned out.

It was nice being out under the stars again. I love the solitude and the perspective you get when you’re out shooting, particularly the moments between shots, standing there, staring up at the stars. It really makes you realise just how small a part of the universe we are. And how lucky we are to be here at all.

Photo Challenge – Vintage Theme

My photo group’s home photo challenge for this week was a vintage theme. I decided I’d take the theme literally and took a few shots of some of the old film cameras in my collection, as well as editing a few photos from earlier in the week to look a bit like film.

It was a fun theme and I’m happy with how the shots turned out. It was fun going through my camera collection too. The Canon TLb was actually my grandfather’s film camera from the 1970s and it’s still in pretty good condition. The Olympus doesn’t work very well anymore unfortunately but I still use the Pentax quite regularly.

I have a few others I didn’t photograph as well, I might do those another time.
