Stockton Sunset

The sun
Sets fire to the sky
Like a dragon
Scorching the horizon

The setting sun as seen from Stockton. Most of the sunset wasn’t that special but the sky turned a lovely orange for a few moments just before it started to disappear. I was lucky enough to get this shot just as it did.

Avocado

Life is like
An avocado:
Sometimes it is bitter,
Sometimes sweet

An avocado shot up close with extension tubes and a 50mm lens. I like the texture of avocados, I’ve often thought they’d be interesting to shoot up close. I shot them wide-open for a bit of a dreamy look as well.

Sunset at Pelican

The sky catches fire:
My eyes search the horizon
For your gentle face

The photo group I run met at Pelican last Sunday. I was excited for the shoot as it’s one of my very favourite spots to shoot around Lake Macquarie and not many people had shot there before. When the conditions are right it can be a real gem.

So I was hoping we’d get a beautiful sunset and it didn’t disappoint! Once the sun had just dipped below the horizon, the sky became this incredible canvas of blue, orange, yellow and purple. We all got some nice shots and I was very happy with how these long exposures came out.

There was also a beautiful crescent moon which I managed to get a shot of afterwards. I don’t tend to shoot the moon when it’s not full, this reminded me I should do it more often. The slither of light against the darkness is quite striking.

Catherine Hill Bay Under the Stars

I went with a friend to shoot some astrophotography at Catherine Hill Bay recently. It’s one of the few spots near Newcastle that’s almost entirely dark, with very little light pollution, so it’s great for the stars and the Milky Way.

I was a little worried it was going to cloud over before the shoot but luckily it stayed very clear and we managed to capture the Milky Way in all its beauty. We also caught the moon rising – it was so bright it almost looks like a sunrise!

Under the Milky Way

The Milky Way
Stretches across the sky:
I see your face
In the stars

I took these shots in Newcastle last week. I’ve always loved the stars and have often wanted to try to shoot the Milky Way but there’s usually too much light pollution around to shoot it properly. I took these at Nobbys Breakwall and while there was still light pollution, it was dark enough to get a few shots. I was pleased with how they came out, particularly not having done a lot of astrophotography before. Not bad for a first attempt!
