I think you need to broaden your horizons. Try Wally Lamb’s “I Know This Much Is True”, about schizophrenic twins . . . excellent!

I like your list – especially Harry Potter. Have you read the Riftwar Saga by Raymond E. Feist or the four books by Christopher Paolini which start with Eragon and end with Inheritance? I found them to be interesting and the Riftwar Saga a bit dark.
